Sensible Sunbathing

Sun tanning is the body’s natural protection against the harmful effects of ultra violet light.  It’s nature’s defense mechanism to protect the body from the sun’s damaging rays.  However, to gain this protective suntan in natural sunlight is as hazardous as it is beneficial.

A suntan is brought about by exposure of the skin to the longer wavelength ultra violet light (UVA) and a smaller dose of shorter wavelength UVB which causes the melanin or pigmentation in the skin to migrate to the surface layers where it oxidizes to form a brown coloured protective layer.

Ninety-nine percent of Vitamin D in the body is derived from a chemical reaction occurring when the skin is exposed to UVB.  Vitamin D is converted by the liver and kidney into a hormone which allows the body to absorb calcium and phosphorous for bone mineralisation.  Some studies suggest that Vitamin D may also   benefit sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis.  Various skin complaints such as acne and psoriasis may also respond favourably to sunlight.

Ironically, too much exposure to sunlight is harmful as is none.

At Head to Toe Body Care Centre we pride ourselves in encouraging safe and sensible exposure to sunlight.  We offer Solarium sessions in our Alisun Sunbed and Spray-on Tanning.  We will diagnose your skin and suggest the best options for you.

Spray On Tanning

Get an incredible tan using the very latest technology in professional spray-on tanning. Utilising an even and gentle spray, a bronzer and the natural and safe tanning agent ‘DHA’ is applied over the entire body.

DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) is the active “tanning” ingredient. DHA interacts with the outermost surface skin layer producing a golden brown colour that resembles the colouration of a UV based tan. DHA reacts with the naturally occurring amino acids and keratin proteins in the dead skin cells resting on the skin’s surface.

The “bronzer” or added tint is a water soluble make-up. It will wash away in the first shower. The added tint does not affect the colour of the final longer lasting DHA tan.

The initial colour lasts until your first shower. The colour that remains is produced by the DHA reacting with your skin. The bronzer gives you an incredibly natural looking tan immediately, whilst the DHA darkens your tan over the next 8 to 12 hours.

Spray-On-Tanning Tips
By following these tips, your UV free tan may last 6 to 12 days with just one application.

BEFORE THE APPLICATION
  •
Exfoliate your whole body (especially feet, elbows and dry areas) the day before.
  •
Before you tan, DO NOT apply moisturizer, deodorant, perfume or makeup.
  •
If possible, wear nail polish on your toes and fingers ~ Clear is OK

    WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU
  •
Remove all jewellery until after your 1st shower. Therefore it is best to leave all jewellery at home.
  •
Wear loose, dark clothing. It is best not to wear a bra after the tan as tight clothes can rub on areas, leaving the tan patchy.
  •
Wear thongs or loose sandals as tight shoes and socks can also leave their mark.

HOW TO PRESERVE THAT GREAT TAN
  •
Do not shower or exercise for 8 hours.
Avoid getting caught in the rain.
  •
Do not apply perfume, moisturizer or deodorant for 8 hours.
  •
But AFTER 8 hours and your initial shower use PLENTY of moisturizer morning and night.
  •
When you shower ~ Avoid soap and use soap free moisturizing washes.
Ensure that you pat yourself dry; do not rub.
  •
    Avoid prolonged swimming and bathing.
  •
Use sunscreen when out in the sun as Fake Tan has NO SPF.
